Shoes: Forever 21 | Jeans: Levis (Thrifted) | Bag: Michael Kors | Shirt: Marshall’s
I’m going to try to keep this post short and sweet since it’s about a simple concept, and also because I want to get back to the beach! I was going to try to do a “What to Pack for Vaca” post, but I didn’t like how the pictures I took turned out, so maybe I’ll try again when I’m packing up to leave. Anyways, this shoot is one that I did last week so I would have some material to post while I’m away, so I would only have to worry about doing one shoot while I’m in NC.
This outfit was originally one I put together on “National Lipstick Day”, so the most eye catching piece of this look is the bright purple lipstick I’m wearing by Milani. Something I have learned over the years is that if your makeup is done, your hair is done, and your wearing good shoes, you can get away with wearing almost anything. This outfit is an easy example. A graphic tee and skinny jeans is about the easiest thing to throw on in the morning aside from sweatpants. By adding some statement pieces and some jewelry, that simple outfit can look a lot more sophisticated.
The statement pieces I picked were a metallic shoe, and metallic jewelry. Then I wanted to add some color by adding the bag, and finally the lipstick. I happened to have on a lavender colored nail polish beforehand, and it was part of the reason I decided to wear a purple lip as opposed to another color. Plus purple has a bit more shock value than a red or pink, and I like purple on me a lot more when I’ve got a bit of a tan.
So next time you want to dress up a basic outfit, look for touches of color and shine to dress up your outfit. A colored shoe and a neutral bag could easily replace what I chose. A high bun and a statement eye look (like a cat eye or a bright liner) could be a substitute for a colored lip. Just keep in mind, the amount of color or shine you add will dictate the amount of attention you draw to yourself. So if you’re someone who wants to fly under the radar, it’s not bad to stick to neutrals only. If you want to turn a few heads and be noticed, a little more color or a statement necklace to add more shine can be a great way to do that.
For me, dressing up basics is all about having fun because you can add any color or style shoe or makeup and chances are it will look great. Just a few things to think about next time you’re running out of the house and you feel boring. Grab a lipstick and switch out a shoe, and you’ll be on your way to streetstyle chic.
